Thousands of years ago, Elder God Shinnok rebelled against the rest of the Elder Gods and decided to use young earthly kingdom, as a source of infinite power.To do this, he created the amulet that gave him the ability to travel between worlds and not be seen by the Elder Gods. The young god of Thunder and protector of Earth's raid was to defend their kingdom and led the war against Shinnok.
During the war with Shinnok whole civilization has been destroyed, but Raiden still managed to win. Shinnok was thrown into Hell, where he remained for many thousands of years.

Mortal Kombat 4, the first game in the series in which the characters were entirely made in 3D instead of sprites. Textures for the characters were taken from the actors who played the characters in previous games in the series, and the animation was created using the technology "motion capture".
In Mortal Kombat 4 was introduced limited use of weapons system, which allows using a small button combinations to get the weapon.
